In May 1913, Rupert Brooke (1887-1915) embarked on a year-long expedition, visiting the United States, Canada, and the South Seas, sending his impressions home in a series of letters. The young British poet describes the beauty of arriving by boat at night in New York, the novelties of a baseball game, and the grandeur of Niagara Falls and the Canadian wilderness. Brooke is blunt in his judgments on society, business, and cities, but playful in his accounts of Anglo-American relations. Henry James's substantial foreword to the 1916 edition is included here as an afterword.
